![]() ![]() Elizabeth Royte, author of Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It contends that, like an iPod or a mobile phone, a bottle of water is “private, portable and individual”. In many ways, we can see that vapes have been marketed like bottled water. Consider the apple, mango or blueberry flavours of the “Elf bar” or the blue razz cherry flavour of the Lost Mary brand. It is very easy to see, with the bright colours and snappy, trendy phraseology of the names, why disposable vapes are attractive to young people. She has argued that disposable vapes and nicotine free vapes, considered to be something used by children before turning to nicotine vapes, should be banned outright. Rachel de Souza, the children’s commissioner for England, has requested that the advertising of vapes be radically altered and become similar in tone and format to the restrictions placed on the marketing of tobacco. With this in mind, it is little wonder that children’s groups are calling on government to take action. According to ASH, the number of 11–17-year-olds experimenting with vapes is up 50% in 2023, compared with last year. ![]() The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has stated that “youth vaping is fast becoming an epidemic among children” and that e-cigarettes can be more addictive than traditional cigarettes. Indeed, there is much concern over the number of children and young people (40, up from 11 in 2021) admitted to hospital with lung problems and conditions relating to asthma. As ASH – Action on Smoking and Health – has stated, the number of e-cigarette users in Britain grew from around 700,000 in 2012 to 4.3 million in 2022.Īnd, if there wasn’t enough to worry the parents of teenagers in the UK, it was announced recently that the NHS was strongly warning of the dangers of young people vaping. ![]() It is a habit which is gradually sweeping the nation. For those not in the know, vaping is the inhaling, rather than the smoking, of nicotine through a handheld device. ![]()
